Like the title says, Heads Up Poker Profits is about making money in heads up (HU) matches. Most poker authors don’t deal with heads up tournaments. Peter Quinn, who successfully beats HU games, has written his formula for success.
He claims you can make up to $500 a day with his system. I think you need to play fairly big stakes to accomplish this, but it definately would be possible for a good HU player. HU poker is a very different game than most, so learning a playing style from a successful HU player could be very valuable.
Peter Quinn finds that most players aren’t experienced at HU matches. I’m sure if you stay in the lower limits you might find this somewhat true. Once you get to higher staked games, I’m sure the sharks are in the water.
With good table selection you can have a big advantage. In this case table selection is simply knowing the player waiting for you to join the game. If you know if he is an experienced HU player, you can chose to stay away from this game.
Another key element in successful HU play is your money management. Money management is necessary in any good poker strategy anyway, so this information applies to all the poker you play. Bank roll management is covered completely in this book.
Peter feels by using his simple formula for playing in these games that you will have no problem beating these games. Combining this with his bank roll techniques, you will make tons of money. In his opinion, you simply can’t lose.
I’ve done a little research on HU leaderboards that are availiable on the internet. What I find is that anyone making serious money at these games has a very high volume of play. The return on investment (ROI) for these players rarely, if ever, exceeds 10%. These are players with thousands of games played.
This is looking at players who are the biggest winners. So, a 5% ROI would seem reasonable. If you play $30 games, just how much could you make?
This equals $1.50 prfit per game. A friend of mine, who can play 3 or 4 HU tables at once, says he can play 20 HU games per hour. This give you some good numbers to look at.
In this case you can make $30 per hour, $1.50 times 20 games. Hard to make $500 a day (would take about 17 hours/day). If you played 8 hours a day, for 5 days a week, you’d make $960 a week.
If you can beat the $30 HU games at this 5% rate and 20 games per hour, you can make about $45-50 thousand a year for your 9 to 5 poker job. There are players who make well over $100,000 a year in online HU games. Maybe you could be the next one. More details here: Heads Up
